I hate that I have been so obsessed with what mainstream media has been over the past week. I have had many thoughts and emotions about race and my experience as a black woman. Then the terrible devastating hate crime that took place in Charelston. Which is making me reel all the more. In the midst of emotions and reeling I wrote this poem. It really deals with the idea of the Savior Complex. Someone who comes to us like Jesus did and... Well just read it...
And here she comes bright as the light from the sun on her white pristine horse of all that is right.
On her journey she came down beaming light and she became like us. She got down in the dirt and her pristine glow slowly began to fade.
Was it the fact that she was in the trenches with us taking on the burden and struggle of us that made her look like us?
She toiled and struggled with us. She toiled and struggle so we began to believe she was us. We loved her she knew us, she knew about us, she even began to look like us, we accepted her.
We forgot that she was different because she had transformed from being with us.She was saving us. From what? We don't know but we loved her. We never questioned because we've been trained. We don't question all that is right.
Then it happened we went to cleanse our souls as did she. When she cleansed we saw that she was not one of us.
She infiltrated us but we loved her. How could she betray us and pretend to be one of us. Don't she know we just tryin to survive and if we could be like her... We probably wouldn't because we love us! We ain't ashamed of us. Sometimes we think for just one moment if only I could... What would life be like?
"I know you're mad" she proclaimed "but don't you remember the struggle I took on with you." "I've struggled too therefore I am you. I've worked for you, to save you."
"We don't need saving" we retorted. How long have we struggled and triumphed without you? You are not our savior. We don't need saving.
Did you think we would bow at your feet and sing your praises for coming down to struggle and triumph with us? We don't need saving.
Please know that this is just a creative expression. I recognize that it may not be "PC" and there are some implications that I do not buy into per se. However it is an abstract creative piece that I was hoping to express emotion. I hope that you enjoyed.
